Just thought of something the other day. For those that have an auto fill valve, lets say fill pressure is set to 12psi. shouldnt the auto fill maintain a min psi through the boiler system at 12psi? The expansion tank would just act as a buffer then as the water is heated. Am I on the right track with this line of thinking ?

That is correct. It may go a little higher as the water gets hotter but should maintain about 12# at minimum.

With that said, if boiler pressure would fall below 12psi, it would be safe to assume that the auto fill could be potentially malfunctioning.

They may waver a few pounds. If it falls below 10# it may need adjusting or replacing. Keep in mind, well water can do a number on them. I've had 3 in 20 years.

Remember most are adjustable.
