I think the biggest difference between the radiant heat from an Axeman and something like a Keystoker or EFM is the simple size of the unit. The AA units are very compact, and have less surface area. When Eshland decided to design their AA clone, they changed the shape (and size?) of the pressure vessel and added an insulated cabinet as standard equipment...you would have to ask them why.
As for the comparison of a hand-fired boiler to an Axeman, I agree it would be no-contest for the amount of heat in the boiler room. The hand-fed sits there at 180 degrees all day, sometimes more...meanwhile the AA sits there at the low limit setting, waiting for a reason to go to work. I had a similar experience when I replaced my hand-fired coal boiler with an EFM, but adding the insulated cabinet made as much or more difference in the basement temperature as the boiler swap itself.

You know, Axeman has been selling their boilers since 1947 IIRC. They offer an insulated cabinet for both models and Pete Axeman claims they have sold a total of 4 of those cabinets in 70 years. They don't give up the heat, trust me.
Well of course I've stood next to one I stand next to mine sometimes twice a day!

Mine came with an insulated cabinet, I just reinsulated it last week, but what I did also was insulate the ends, the fan side and site door side, which is not done from the factory, and has made a huge improvement in keeping the heat inside the boiler.

Weekly report. Friday to Friday.
390 pounds, 55.7 pounds per day.
3/4 of a tub of ash.
Aquastat still at 155-165.
Ash temp 113-115.
Turn the basement radiator zone up to 73 from 72.
Also house is now 72 during the day, 75 during the night.
Circulator on speed 3.
As it’s getting colder out we find it getting warmer inside lol

None of my friends want to come sit with me in my 74-75 degree living room. The young couple that visited last night left here cooked up like a day at the beach. I try to explain it to them that once you are used to that heat at a very early age, you can’t do without it, but they won’t have any of it. That’s just life when you own a house coal yard.
When I go visit them, I sit on their couch in a flannel and I’m certain I can pert near see my breath!
Look on the bright side...when company shows up here that I’m not especially fond of they tend not to stay so long, they think I’m over-firing. You know what the Good Book says about casting your pearls before swine!
How do you like having your cake and eating it too bro?

Haha absolutely! We are a young couple but grew up with wood stoves, so used to 75-80 heat, and we very rarely get company either!CoalJockey wrote: ↑Fri. Nov. 17, 2017 6:30 pm

My cake is very satisfying!!
Do you have a rough estimate of your coal consumption yet??

I confess I have not been keeping track of it like I wanted to, but between new baby arrival and keeping things rolling at work I’ve been filling it and walking off. Right now, I am just carrying two 5-gallon buckets up through the yard with me when I leave the coal yard at the end of the day. I think a very honest estimate though so far would be that I’ve used around a half a ton, I feel I am pretty familiar with volumes & estimated weights. I fired up I think early October, I forget the day now.
The other two 520s we have around here use 8-10 ton a year and I am shooting for 6 tons....new triple pane windows, boiler in the basement, and more fuel efficient controls. Dad thinks I am out of my gourd but even if I use twice as much in the dead of Winter, at this current rate I still don’t think that 6 tons is a crazy prediction to make. That’s with the first floor at 74-75 and most of the second story at 73.

Probably the same tub that came with mine. I generally try to empty mine at about ballpark 2/3 full, and that seems to generally require the burning of about 260 lbs. of my Blaschak coal.

I bought mine at tractor supply as mine did not come with one, guess I’ll have to start weighing it.
