You don't have to take the tin totally off, just loosen it up enough to place the insulation in there. It will be a lot easier than heating the outside.

Yes I will try it this weekend.
So for the bin, a 8x8x6 bin should deff hold 8 ton of pea?

Yes. It may actually hold as much as 9.25 tons.hotblast1357 wrote: ↑Thu. Oct. 19, 2017 10:30 amYes I will try it this weekend.

That’s what I calculated, but I obviously won’t be filling to absolute level capacity.

You are well safe with your calculation. With some of the super dense coal you might squeeze in 10 tons.

Hopefully I can get this constructed this weekend!

Ideally you want the least dense coal you can find. Carbon is less dense than rocks and other contaminants that will wind up as ash. I've found that Coal Gun's like low density coal more than they like high density coal. Particularly if you intend to burn year round.

I burn Lehigh pea. We buy it by the TT load.

I’m averaging 50 pounds per day right now, this is with having to shut down the boiler for some repairs and what not, still getting it dialed in, and have to get the boiler building sealed up still. I’m hoping to hit 35-40 pounds per day with the light heat loads and DHW usuage once everything is running smoothly.
Aquastat still set at 170, and ashing temp set at 120.

Put 360lbs in today, emptied the ash pan. We’ll see how this works.

Once you insulate it, and it settles in for the long haul, it should sip less coal. That is, until not long from now when the cold arrives. But the NOAA has announced that we are in for another warm winter.

Here is the ash, looks about right for a stoker I think.

Ok I will focus more on the boiler first, don’t you worry there is plenty of make up air! Lol

So now that the electric water tank is up to boiler temp, like rob said my delta T across my dhw heat exchanger has dropped significantly, I’m seeing about 10-12 degrees between the feed and return, that’s with a 10 minute shower. My mixing valve is introducing quite a bit of cold I believe. It came with a temp stick so I have to measure my hot water temp one of these days.
