Well the garden is in and growing and it is time for me to return to building my coal hulling trailer and my coal bins!!
First I want to thank all of you for all of your help in the past and in the future!
I have got three 6 inch straight augers, one is a 12' AHS auto auger to feed from the inside bin into the boiler hoper. The 2nd is 10' long for the trailer and the 3rd is 17' long for the outside coal bin.
Now I am looking into flex augers, I am looking for a place to go talk to a sales person or anyone that can help me understand what I need to build a flex system about 50' long. It seems I have read so many deferent opinions as to size and types I am confused. I have also read somewhere that if using PVC pipe with a flex auger it can be buried under ground and that would be best for me so any info about size and type of tube needed to burry it underground will help me a lot. Also any info about dealers close to me will be a great help as I can not seem to find any. THANKS AGAIN AND I MISSED TALKING TO YOU ALL !

If an auger is traveling under ground and it binds up, how would you address the problem?

The same way I would if the flex tube was above ground, pull it apart and repair it.

You do know what the flex auger being discussed is, don't you? It looks like a "slinky" and be near impossible to ever have it jam...it is a hollow core-less auger inside a large 4" pipe...in order to come out one need only pull flex auger in opposite direction from how they pulled it in to start with.
Nothing a rented Ditch Witch couldn't dig out in about a half hour of time...

I was thinking the same as you, it does not matter if a flex auger is under ground or above ground the repair would be the same. Pull it out one or both ends. A ditch about 2' deep by 1' wide by 40' long the rest would be above ground would not be hard to dig even at my age with out a Ditch Witch, but you are right I could rent one and make it easy on myself!! If I use a 4 inch PVC pipe what size flex auger would I need ?? THANKS AGAIN !!!!</r>

I've got a little experience with hollow core augers. They don't jam in the sense it ceases to turn. They get something caught in them that refuses to move. I will warn you, when it isn't being used it will attract rodents that nest so make sure they have no access. Instead of burying the whole thing, why not just one end and run it on an incline? It won't be easy digging if the ground is frozen.

Make sure it is sealed against water if underground...

6" is what I would recommend.
