I would go in the middle of the longest pipe. That said, mine is on an elbow where I shove a probe thermometer in the hole when not reading the draft. It isn't critical but the preference is a straight length to obtain a laminar flow (big deal, LOL).
I put it in the 45 degree pipe about 12 inches up and 5 inches before the 90 degree elbow. I bent the tubing so it points down stream.
I hooked the rubber tube to the low side of the manometer. It read .03 with the fan running and .02 about 15 minuets after the fan shut down.
When I drilled the hole I noticed a lot of fine light brown ash inside the stove pipe. Is this normal ? Please remember I lit my first coal fire on 11/8/2017 and I still have a lot to learn and I do appreciate all ur help and advice. Could not of got this far with out all of you.
Thanks again!!

You may, it's Ian. My Axeman will huff a tiny bit of ash out the top of the chimney at startup. Not a lot but noticeable if you're paying attention. Thats a stout blower.

Elect went out for about 5 or 6 hours today and the fire did not go out. I am thinking about what to use for back up.

I have killed the power to my boiler for over 12 hours while still running the circulator and radiators to pull the heat off it, and it still came back to life when I turn the fan back on!

I am putting in a whole house back PTO power generator due to having the available tractor to power it.

For right now I plug my circulator into my little gas generator just to keep the boiler from over shooting.

They'll go 2-3 days without power and come right back.

<t>MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all. I learned something again yesterday after my fire went out. After checking around I found out the grate fuse was blown, my wife Sandy said it was clinkers and sure enough it was, I broke up the clinkers and replaced the fuse and before long we had a hot fire going, anyone tell me how to avoid clinkers? <br/>
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU !!</t>

You will always have clinkers with this type of boiler. What brand and size of coal are you using, and what are your ashing parameters (SV and Hysteresis)?

I have pee size bagged Blaschak and the ashing parameters are factory set as I don't know enough to change them . This is the first clinker problem I have had since I lit the first fire on Nov. 8th. of this year. Same size coal, same brand bags, but the coal is stored out side, could frozen or wet coal cause it to form clinkers??
THANKS AND MERRY CHRISTMAS Ron nd Sandy
