Wouldn’t want Mr. Thirsty to empty out the tank today while you’re at work today! :)

I just had another thought while sitting in the living room trying to figure out how to get a little more heat in there......a few pages back I was thinking about cutting a hole in the floor and letting the 95 degree air from the basement just flow through but most of the replies said that I would possibly get dust and added noise since the boiler is directly below. Since the boiler is directly below, what about adding baseboards around the outside walls in that room on it's own thermostat? I don't know anything about baseboard heat but I wouldn't think it would be to bad of an installation, just not getting the heat through the floor like I thought I would and looking for a way to warm it up a little more if possible.
Boiler has been chugging away with no issues. I should probably open it up and do a quick fly ash cleanup but warmer temps are here so there is not a hard load on the boiler. I was spitting a lot of unburned coal off one of the stokers so I backed the feed off a little and was burning good this morning, I figure I may have some plugged holes on the stoker bed since I am getting a lot of fines. With that being said I am still planning on a chimney this off season and if I get that done I will look for a 520 or AA260.....how do these boilers do with fines? Does it create havoc with the underfed design of the 520? I would imagine the 260 being top fed would not be an issue?

put some baseboard in the living room or radiators will change everything.

My 260 will eat whatever you put in it.

I have a good amount of fines also this year from my TT load, but it’s cuz it came from the pile instead of off the wash belt. The 260 doesn’t care.

I have never had an issue with fines bothering my EFM.

As for your hot boiler room, why not just circulate some air with the old basement?

No need, the entire old part of the basement is around 78 degrees if I had to guess. The basement steps are in the mud room outside the kitchen and going from the kitchen to the mud room is a joyous experience every morning. My old stone basement walls are about 14" thick and uninsulated but doesn't seem to affect temp in there....the new basement has 3" foam boards around the outside of the walls. Now there is a crawl space under the kitchen and there are fairly large holes between that and old basement but doesn't seem to affect temps either?

This season I have a foam board lid on top of the refractory cover. That cover would register 160 degrees on the infrared gun before I installed that. Last winter you had me foam board around the base of the boiler which I did on 3 sides, the side I didn't do is the rear where the stove pipe breech is. I'll hit that with the gun and see what it is. I would say should I fire brick line the inside walls of the boiler base but if I can get a chimney built, we will be on to new adventures as I need more capacity.

Thought of all the short comings of this 90 page saga when I came across this little item...

This does 3 things as I see it...
1.) Buffer Tank
2.) HW Storage Tank
3.) Dump Zone that works always...even on utility Power Loss...can work along side of a pumped dump zone if desired.
Maybe there's more...

Smarter Across the Pond

3-way thermostatic valve...if you look closely you can see the automotive style thermostat in cut-away section on the right.

The real issue is not enough boiler to cover heat load. While my boiler does what it is supposed to do 90% of the time, it runs out of capacity when I need it most in the remaining 10% (polar vortex, very high winds in single digits). Going to try my best to get a chimney and get a boiler that will handle that last 10%. Really 90% is low, I think I have ran my propane furnace in conjunction with the boiler for approximately 5 days this whole heating season so far. I really can "get by" with my current setup but I ultimately want my propane furnace to rot!

If you go with an AA-260 or AHS-260 your cleaning intervals will likely go from once every few weeks to once a season.

Once a season, whether it needs it or not. :P

That would be amazing! I know my boiler is in need of a cleaning but it is hard to get the time....basketball season is a week from being over, then I will have time to get some things caught up before baseball fires up in April!

So we had the "Bomb Cyclone" go through yesterday and here's what happened, power vent was getting overpowered by the wind gusts. It would bounce from -.01 to .04 positive! I thought having a fan would be like creating my own atmosphere but the power of mother nature prevails once again. My fire kept going and I wasn't showing any ppm of CO so I wasn't to alarmed but could smell a little sulfur now and then. What happens with a chimney in those extreme wind conditions, more draft?
