I just bought a keystoker kb 8, is it UL approved?
I need help when the builder inspector ask for the tag of the UL ?
What can I do, in order to install my coal and oil boiler?

Thank you

Your best bet is to call Keystoker and ask.

efm equipment is UL approved. To maintain the UL rating the unit must be in the same condition as when it was tested for UL. For instance, if someone would add a second circulator to our electric boiler and not use the approved relays or transformer, it would violate the UL rating. Whether this would matter to an insurance adjuster is a whole 'nother story.

I am told the are approved. I'm not sure if it's UL or some other approval, but they are fine for residential use. If you install it yourself most places have a way for it to be inspected by the fire dept. If the fire dept says OK, the insurance will too. However I don't intend to tell either. Let sleeping dogs lie!

Just to clarify the laungauge, UL doesn't "approve" anything. They test and "list".

Thank you guys,
I am still a little frustrated with the UL approved, the plumber told me that if the coal & oil keystoker don't have the tag of the UL, it will not be approved by the builder inspector.

What should I do?
Thank you

We don't have a tag on any efm stoker either, but when they did the testing in the lab, the UL was there and approved whatever electrical devices were used and no changes were made since then. If you have a commercial application, which I don't think you do, it must be a "coded" boiler and registered with L&I. in PA.

Tell me what the decal has to say & I'll make one for you. Heh heh heh. I can print on brushed chrome, it'd look real professional! ;)

Keystoker boilers are listed by an agency other than U.L., but they are tested by a similar agency. Keystoker boilers are not ASME rated, and some states, such as Massachusetts require that all boilers have the ASME rating to be installed, even in residential applications.

Could you post a reference or ideally a link to the ASME requirement for residential use. I'm trying to trace why such a requirement exists. The same was true in PA until a few years ago. There it occurred when PA adopted a state wide minimum building code that required all boilers to be ASME code.

I believe it was that same change that imposed ridiculous requirements on homeowners such as not being able to change your hotwater heater by yourself. I forget it exactly what it was but something along those lines.

I don't know about Keystoker but Harman boilers are tested and listed by Warnock-Hersey labs, I well known and regarded tester of heating devices.

I don't know of any regs that say a coded boiler is required for residential use in PA. Maybe it's only a local reg.

Take a look at the PDF file in my prior post:
EFM Pressure Is Too High
What was repealed was a PA statewide code stamp requirement boilers in residential use. Look at the last page of the bill. There's the quote, "(D) COAL-FIRED BOILERS IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS. - COAL-FIRED BOILERS INSTALLED IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS SHALL BE DESIGNED , CONSTRUCTED AND TESTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF CHAPTER, SECTION M 2001.1.1 OF THE INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL CODE OF 2003, OR ITS SUCCESSOR PROVISIONS, EXCEPT THAT THESE BOILERS SHALL NOT BE SUBJECT TO THE STAMPING REQUIREMENTS OF SECTION M2001.1.1"

So coal boilers must still be built and tested to code but there is no stamping requirement.

Edit: There must be an error in the quote. My 2006 International Mechanical Code book lists the "TESTS" section as 1011.1
I know it's trivia but, it's damn hard to track down these details and perhaps it will be easier for someone in the future.

I don't know the meaning of "stamping requirements", but in order to get a stamp, the state inspector must be present when the boilers are tested and must look over the specs, etc. So, I guess if the boiler is made to a condition that would pass a state inspection, it would be OK.

All efm boilers are "coded", so it's a moot point as far as we are concerned.

False info. The only thing that is ever required is an ASME certification. And that is only in commercial. (a few states require it for residences, Mich. and Mass.)
