It's been a little more than 6 months since we shut down the VA-600. Out in the garage we are at the end of our Pea coal supply for the Axeman Anderson. Since we still have plenty of Rice coal for the Van Wert, it is time to clean it up and get it ready to fire.
IMG_7993.JPG
.JPG | 314.6KB | IMG_7993.JPG
For this Summer, I decided that we would try the 6" insulated stainless steel chimney that the Harman was connected to. This is taller and drafts better than my short masonry chimney.
IMG_7999.JPG

IMG_8000.JPG
.JPG | 303.5KB | IMG_8000.JPG
IMG_8001.JPG
.JPG | 315.7KB | IMG_8001.JPG
We're going to be running it Low & Slow so it should work OK with the 6" stove pipe and chimney, I hope.

Since we have it all cleaned up and not fired, I figured it would be a good time to do some Low & Slow feed rate tests.

An empty ash pan with the chain weighs 9.5 pounds.
IMG_7997.JPG
.JPG | 285.6KB | IMG_7997.JPG

2.5" drive pulley, 25 tooth auger sprocket.
IMG_7994.JPG
.JPG | 314.2KB | IMG_7994.JPG
After 2 hours of run time, 23.5 pounds.
IMG_8003.JPG
.JPG | 381.6KB | IMG_8003.JPG
IMG_8004.JPG
.JPG | 305.7KB | IMG_8004.JPG
Subtract 9.5 pounds for the pan and chain, then divide by 2 hours and we have 7 pounds per hour. This is very close to the calculated 6.5 pounds per hour that we were using for previous consumption calculations. I ran this feed rate test twice and came up with the same result.

Next we ran a feed rate test with a 2" drive pulley.

2.0" drive pulley, 25 tooth auger sprocket.
IMG_8006.JPG
.JPG | 303.2KB | IMG_8006.JPG
After 2 hours of run time, 21 pounds.
IMG_8005.JPG
.JPG | 309.2KB | IMG_8005.JPG
Subtract 9.5 pounds for the pan and chain, then divide by 2 hours and we have 5.75 pounds per hour.

So now we know what our 2 different Low & Slow feed rates are, 5.75 and 7 pounds per hour. We will be firing it up in the next week or so and we will try it at 5.75 pounds per hour first.

IT'S TIME TO FIRE IT UP!!!

We ran the 1959 Axeman Anderson completely out of coal yesterday. We left the pump on to pump the heat all out. This evening we fired up the Van Wert VA-600 again.

We're running super low and slow. 2" motor drive pulley and 25 tooth auger sprocket. This was measured at about 5.75 pounds per hour. We'll call it 5.5 just to keep it easy.
IMG_8093.JPG
.JPG | 316.8KB | IMG_8093.JPG
Stack temp is about 180.
IMG_8094.JPG
.JPG | 280.3KB | IMG_8094.JPG
Overfire draft is about -0.01.
IMG_8095.JPG
.JPG | 335.9KB | IMG_8095.JPG
The 6" chimney is drafting well so far. We're not putting much air through it though.

We also installed an hour meter. Starting at 270.3 hours.

Here is the Fiery video.

Current settings;

Feed Rate = 5.5 pounds per hour. (2.0" drive pulley, 25 tooth auger sprocket).
Air = 5.
Aquastat = LO = 155, HI = 200, DIFF = 10.
Timer = 2 minutes every hour.

During our first 6 days of running we have had to tweak the air setting a bit.
IMG_8098.JPG
.JPG | 316KB | IMG_8098.JPG
It was actually pushing a little lit coal over the side. We started at 5, then increased it to 7, then increased it to 11. Hopefully that's enough.
IMG_8100.JPG
.JPG | 316.2KB | IMG_8100.JPG
Overfire draft is still staying negitive.

290.9 - 270.3 = 20.6 hours, 3.43 hours per day, 18.88 pounds per day.
22.5 pounds of ash, 19.9%

Surprisingly, there is one of those Dern Cicadas in the ash pan! :o How the heck did that get here?

.JPG | 455.4KB | IMG_8105.JPG
I am hoping that we can get it down to the 14 - 15 pound per day area.

Current settings;

Feed Rate = 5.5 pounds per hour. (2.0" drive pulley, 25 tooth auger sprocket).
Air = 11.
Aquastat = LO = 155, HI = 200, DIFF = 10.
Timer = 2 minutes every hour.

First full week and we have had to back the air off a little. Not because it wasn't burning right but because the overfire draft spends too much time on the positive side. We were actually getting a little stink in the house.

Backed the air down to 7.5 today. I guess we'll live with a little more unburnt coal. :no1:

Sorry guys, my camera has encountered a problem. Hopefully I can fix it. Otherwise we will be getting a new one at some point.

337.6 - 313.2 = 24.4 hours, 134.2 pounds, 3.19 hours per day, 19.17 pounds per day.
32.5 pounds of ash, 24.2%

Cutting the air down to 7.5 from 11 seems to have increased our run time and our ash percentage by a good bit. Other than that it is running great with good overfire draft and no stink.

Current settings;

Feed Rate = 5.5 pounds per hour. (2.0" drive pulley, 25 tooth auger sprocket).
Air = 7.5.
Aquastat = LO = 155, HI = 200, DIFF = 10.
Timer = 2 minutes every hour.

We had an outfire this week. This is very unusual for the Van Wert. Not sure what happened, I checked the timer, no problems there. This was Thursday night, I lit it up again and it has kept going ever since. The fire on this Van Wert has kept going through 3+ hour power outages with no problem.

OUTFIRE!!!

I'm gonna blame this one on the Gofer.
IMG_0001.JPG

The Gofer has been making the hills in this bin a bit too Vertical.

Yup, that's the mouth of the auger down there gasping for coal.

IMG_0005.JPG
.JPG | 335.2KB | IMG_0005.JPG
I poked the hills with a shovel and now the auger can breath again.
IMG_0008.JPG

513.4 - 487.4 = 26.0 hours, 143.0 pounds, 3.71 hours per day, 20.43 pounds per day.

I'll have to keep an eye on it until we get our coal delivery. I ordered 2.5 ton of Rice for the Van Wert and 4 ton of Pea for the Axeman. Coal is pretty expensive this year, $217 a ton. I get a $5 per ton discount for ordering more than 5 ton so it will be $213 per ton.

Current settings;

Feed Rate = 5.5 pounds per hour. (2.0" drive pulley, 25 tooth auger sprocket).
Air = 7.5.
Aquastat = LO = 155, HI = 200, DIFF = 10.
Timer = 2 minutes every hour.

Well at least you caught it before the boiler cooled off to much.
That is pretty pricey for coal compared to up my way. I am tempted to order 10 ton myself. I don’t see fuel prices coming down anytime soon.
