While reading about mid season maintenance and the stack's filling/plugging up with ash in some of the other threads, I was wondering if this is a problem with the EFM? By the way it looks, I'd say that the thing could burn 20+ tons before it needed to be cleaned out, what's your experience with this?

Well, it depends. On stoker stoves, obvisously you need to stay after it.
On a furnace or boiler, keep an eye on your pipe and chimney base. The internals will generally be OK for a year at a time.
