If the quantity of oversize isn't too great, a screen of an appropriate size can serve the same purpose.

Mike
When i initially built my hopper,i installed woven wire with a 1/2" square opening. Even rice coal goes thru slowly & if a bucket full was dumped on it,lots of the rice would just sit there on a pile waiting for help to go down thru. Pushing the coal back & forth across the wire with my leather gloves made it go down thru, but the wire joints wore & the wires just moved around which made the screening idea worthless. Someday ... if i ever get around to caring about it again.... i would like to find something more heavy duty & likely 5/8" to3/4" holes. This would allow even the large rice i now use to fall thru & should still prevent the big stuff from falling thru that could cause auger issues.

The pictures tell the tale of what i did this am. Everdale trucking brought 12.52 tons of large rice from Gale mining Co.My hobby farmer friend drove his tractor here to power the PTO driven auger & all 12.52 tons of coal went in my coal bin. This will be for rainy/snowy day use as i will continue to use the pile of coal on the ground outside my boiler box as weather permits.$145/ton,$25 for the tractor use,$300 for the truck = $170.96/ton which is higher per ton than last yr.due to the part load. The best local price was $184/ton delivered.

The experts say that "if the surviving spouse gets out of bed & gets dressed, they have done well "...

I have been doing that for 2 yrs., 7 months & counting. This yr. with all the rain has kept me very busy in my shop. The warmup in mid February got my spring rush started on Feb. 20 & has not left up till recently.

Where we had garden when my wife was living,i left all go back to lawn. Lots of orchard grass grows where garden had been. With manure & organic fertilizer in the ground the orchard grass grew to 12" tall each week for many weeks. With 3 acres of grass to mow ,it has given my tractor a workout this yr.

Looking at the forecast,i think my heat will be on again by next weekend. Having the entire season's coal supply in stock here is a great feeling.

With current health issues and the logistics of things we've been getting Blaschak through local delivery(Jono Hardware and Countryside). Quite a bit more expensive but dealing with getting a triaxle load setup and stored just isn't practical at the moment. If things ever get caught back up from health and life issues we may look at larger coal loads again.

Anyone happen to know what to use for replacing the ash door gasket on this? My dad said it's probably somewhere in this thread but I didn't find it in a search. Also the air adjustment flap seems to have come loose from its shaft, anyone know what all is involved or can stear me to the right pages? My dad's memory isn't the best about where stuff is anymore and of course he can't see it either. Thanks

Chad

I used a 1/4" thick by 1" wide flat gasket to do our 520's ash door. A 1/8 might have worked but the top of our door was farther out than the bottom. I took the door off to work on it and bungied a white kitchen garbage bag around the opening and just left it idle while I finished puting on the new gasket. I put masking tape on the frame to prevent the RTV from sticking while it dried...

Chad, does she look like she'd take a flat gasket or does she have a lil trough for round?

No trough, my dad said he used flat from what he remembers. Should be able to go by what nepa said. Now to figure out the flap -_-

Ended up running the unit up to scrapper and getting it reconned. There was some pretty good wear so things might of worked out better this way. Everything is back together and running smoothly. Next step will be getting coal again before winter hits.

We've actually dealt with them once, may go that route again. Their conveyor didn't work with our setup, unloading took forever so we'd have to see about our auger being setup.
