Does anyone have any tips for cleaning the boiler? The flame is real lazy right now and I think under the grate is probably quite full of fines.Taking the combustion fan off & on is not fun with a hot boiler. I really don't want to shut the boiler down but I fear that may be unavoidable.

No way to do it hot. If you burn year round, get a warmer day, let her cool and tear her down. If you shut down, spring is only a couple weeks away.

Would it make sense to drill a hole or two in the bottom of the pan to let the fines drop into the ash pan? You would also be able to hold a vacuum hose up to the hole.

I wouldn't that's just another place for precious combustion air to escape.

We have talked about adding a slide door or tray to the bottom but it may cause more trouble if it gets corroded or bent.

Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but I have noticed an increase in the amount of fines this coal is producing. I suspect the tray is quite full at this point in the season. A way to clean it out would be beneficial.
