New Boiler Keystoker or Leisure Line

Need your opinions. I will be replacing the oil fired boiler with coal. I have a 122,000 BTU unit now that does the job. I'm comparing the KA6 and the LL110. What do you guys think?

How much oil do you use per season?

I can't compare oil use. I use a LL Pioneer to heat the house with the oil. Looking to compare the Keystoker to the LL

Fuel use is one indicator of load.

You will need to figure out if you need the extra capacity of the KA-6.

As I read the LL website, it says the 110 boiler has 110k input BTU and is 86+% efficient, so I would infer that the gross heat output is 95+k btu/hr. The KA-6 is much bigger, with a gross output of 144k btu/hr, which translates to total theoretical capacity (including pick-up) of 960 s.f. of hot water radiation, net theoretical capacity of about 813 s.f. and a recommended load of 675 s.f. On a comparable basis, 95k btu/hr would translate to a total theoretical capacity of about 633 s.f. and net theoretical capacity of about 537 s.f.. I haven't found an LL recommended load.

A reasonable first step would be to add up your s.f. of installed radiation and assess any DHW load faced by the boiler to see whether the LL is able to carry the combined load. My initial concern would be that the LL might be too small, but if the oil boiler is oversized relative to the load that might not be the case.

Can You Keep the Oil Fired Boiler as a Back-Up if you called away from Home for an extended length of time? I don't think you can go wrong with taking a Good,Hard Look at the Leisure Line Of Equipment. I will measure the sf of radiation. Before I had the coal stoker the oil burner never had a issue with keeping the heat up.So my guess is 122,000 is oversize.

I didn't see a KA 4 on Keystokes site. That's why I was looking at the 6

The LL has the oil burner with it duel fuel and the Keystoker has a option for one. My thinking was to remove the current oil burner. Not a lot of space in these coal town house basements.
I am aware of LL and there service. I have two LL stoves running now. House and garage with no problems at all for years.

My KA-6 was $4500 in the summer- 3-4 years back.

Big John. Is your current set updoing the hot water also? You may want to go with the KA-6. It's been bullet proof for me so far. I'm very happy they did not have the KA- 4 when I was looking. It probably would not have been enough for me this year being as cold as it has been.

Boiler in basement of 4 year old modular (3500 square feet plus 1700 square foot unfinished basement that gets up to 76degrees from boiler radiation

)with good insulation and windows and doing the hot water. 7.5 tons a year. As they say.... your mileage may very!

I got my used, 4 year old KA6 last summer for $2000.00. I talked the guy down from $3000.00. His girlfriend didn't like the smell,.....outside! He was going to instal some sort of wood burning system. I bet he regrets selling the coal boiler now!
