Stoker Coal Boiler: yellow flame

Post Sat. Jan. 25, 2014 8:50 am

Having issues keeping from going out????

It seems to go out within hour after aquastat shuts down. I have a 5 degree diff. trying to keep going. I have tried lowest feed setting to highest.

setup:
8" pipe 8' across with rise to 6" reducer and chimney(14')
chestnut coal

Do I need timer to fire every 1/2 hour?????

Also smoke and steam come through coal in hopper when running?????

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you

check your pipe run for fly ash....
exhaust coming out hopper is an indicator of poor draft and the fly ash could be the cause of that....

CO monitor in place??!!??!!
A manometer would be useful to have permanently installed to watch your draft numbers.
You will need to run via timer periodically to keep the fire going. how often is a little installation dependent.

I'm not used to seeing a stoker using nut coal. :)

Got Carbon Monoxide Detectors?Alarms?????
These are the signs of poor or blocked chimney draft. Urgent solution needed immediately.

I believe you want a 15min. timer.

You need to do two things right away.

1. Shut down!!! Remove and clean the pipe from the boiler to the chimney and make sure your chimney is clear.

2. Get a repeat cycle timer and install it where it starts the stoker mechanism every 15 minutes or at least 1 to 1 and 1/2 minutes.

Cleaning out the piping will stop the fan from pushing the products of combustion up into the hopper. The repeat cycle timer will get air going through the grates to keep the coal lit.

8 foot of 8" pipe horizontal run is going to give you a problem. That problem is compouned by the reduction to 6" pipe. This long horizontal run will become blocked with flyash in a short time.

I have never heard of using chestnut coal in one of these, only buck rice and barley.

As stated above, you need to run a 15 min or less timer cycle.

Your chiminey is not ideal, you can try limiting the combustion air. If you do not have a choke on your combustion blower you can make it out of sheetmetal, it's easy. I have my Yellow Flame running into a 6" chimney and have the same problem, choking down the combustion air helped a lot. Looks like this.

Please post some photos of your boiler and setup. We all would like to see another Yellow Flame, They are a little rare these days.

Also post your location, One of us may live close by and be able to help you get straitned out.
