Oh good God I see what your saying now!!!!!

I was looking and looking for a "box" to fill not realizing it was an open type pan!!

I've been running it dry and filthy since it was installed. I'm lucky I didn't ruin something running it like that. I have from time to time sprayed WD 40.

So I know that I have a big cleaning job tomorrow morning and I guess I will be using the housing cover all the time!

Thanks both of you for clearing things up for me! This goes to show you the value of the people here and the forum for a knuckle-head like me.

Thanks again
Jon

Make sure you report back.

There might be other things that need attention.

I've recently discovered John Deere corn head grease - I use it in snowblower auger gearcases. Works like a gear oil when operating, but acts like a grease when stationary - thixotropic is the word to describe that phenomenon. :D

If the gear case tends to weep or leak, then this stuff is the ticket. It's good from -30°F all the way up to 330°F. Perfect for slow speed applications like the aforementioned snowblower auger gears, CV axles, and a stoker gearbox.

I have started to use Lucas hub oil for my transmission fluid changes lately. It also resists leaking out the seals and stays on the gears a lot longer than regular gear oil. They sell it in Napa and Advance auto.
