Hi all. Do I need to slap furnace cement/hight temp silicone sealant at the top of the burner grates after reinstalling them or just slide them back in? Thanks!

Absolutely. Use furnace cement. It comes in a tub and has the consistency of cake icing. Smear the edges above the holes and the tops with a good amount. Clean the excess from the top surfaces after they are in place.

Any air leaks above the perforated part of the grates will guarantee a hopper fire. You don’t want that.

On my Keystoker 90 with the flatplate burner design I used furnace cement around the entire perimeter as well as the seam where my 2 plates meet.

Don't forget to add some furnace cement under the grates at the top side, also. An air tight seal down to the openings in the grate is essential.

Another question on grates. How often should they be re-cemented if there's no issue with them?

They would only need to be re-cemented if they are removed or replaced. They only need to be replaced if they warp or crack. Keep the fines cleaned up under the grates at least once a year and you probably won’t ever have an issue. The bulk of the sealant is between the grates and along the top there is a ledge and lip that need sealed. If you ever need to take them apart the cement will be obvious and you just apply cement to those same areas. Thoroughly remove any old cement first. Any cement that squeezes up from between the grates can be wiped off with a damp cloth before it cures. Any lumps or bumps on the top of the grates would impede the coal flow down the grates.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Thanks gaw. Just making sure before being in the middle of heating season to find out it needed to be a routine maintenance.

Thanks all! All cemented up and installed. Now to finish the piping and wiring!
