After enjoying my new 520 from early spring time I was going to shut her down and use electric for DHW this summer. Well a bunch of you, and my boiler man Dave said, "just keep burning" ! Well...........
Today was the last bit of a blue plastic 55 gal. load that has been our coal usage from July 1st .
Dave helped me with the final settings.
Feed, 3 teeth. Air, 5.5 Timer 1.5 min, 2 x per hr. Aquastat is 140 deg. And the bypass loop is full open. We have had nice, plentiful DHW all summer to date.

How did I not know about all this 30 years ago ?

Thanks to all again !

Dave

That is a lot of air for 3 teeth of feed. Is your coal unusually hard or slow burning? I have always gotten good results with 4 teeth and 4 air...maybe 4.5 air depending on the coal.

I am currently burning buck size coal...average 14 lbs per day to make hot water for a family of three. I enjoy just letting it run all summer and keeping the basement warm and dry. Ash tub is full every 10-12 days, easy enough to manage.

I can relate to the coal being a hobby statement! Sometimes its like golf, frustrating. But does save a ton of money in heating bills.
