That is not common, but the old GE down-draft oil boilers were often piped that way.

Thanks Rob. The EFM manual show the pumps on the return in the back.
I think I will try to video and take some pictures tomorrow and get them posted.

There are reasons to have the pumps on either side, but for most residential systems with a functional air eliminator it doesn't make a noticeable difference.
