Got some time this morning so I replaced that 1and1/4 inch radiator pipe that was too long due to re-pitching the mains. Had to use the "Super-Ego" and my homemade five foot length of 3" for a cheater to take the old pipe out. Worked fine.
Measured and cut a new pipe. Tape and dope and in it went.

Steve, I meant to ask, how did you hold the tee or elbow under the floor in the crawlspace?? Did you hire a neighbor's teenage son? or figure out a way to fit and brace a pipewrench under the floor?

Well, after getting a ride home by Mrs A and putting my pin wheels away, I had some time for a few adds to the AA 260.
Set up a Dwyer Magnehelic and set for about .035 for draft at idle. Also, put in a nice temp gauge for the smoke pipe.
I skimmed the boiler as well. Man, did all that machining oil from the pipe work come out!!! It was like a big belch at one point right in the beginning with a oozy mess that flowed out like a slick. After that I just eased the surface off for about 4 hours. The sight glass is noticeably cleaner and while viewing the glass while boiler is working there is less surging too.

Venting is a big priority with a steam system. Not only for the basement main pipes but also the radiators as well. A good friend helped me determine the proper venting capacity of each radiator and I put Gorton vents on each one according to its capacity. Mostly sizes D, C and #6. I then tapped three of my largest radiators for an additional air vent slightly below the original as per 'John W. Schulz' mentioned in Dan Holohan's The Lost Art of Steam Heating book (Pg 112). Not only do they help vent those big rads, but now I have the pleasure of seeing a sweet pair of "Double D's" staring me in the face when I round the corner to the living room from the hall. Lucky is the man with a set of D's in his home.
On the Mains are the big Gorton #2s.
The vents have really helped out. I get all my rads to heat across now. It was a struggle to get that sort of solid heat across prior to the new near boiler piping, the venting and of course the serious BTU's put out by the Axeman.

Steve,
What was the outcome w/ that timer?
Oh, BTW, I'm looking at proposals from decorators to have a Tastefully decorated sitting area.
Hoped you wouldn't mind...I supplied them w/ a picture of yours, so they'd get some ideas.

MC, the timer is a goner. I'm looking for a replacement now.
Don't mind sharing the pics at all. I'm gonna keep adding to mine as I go along. Once I finish pouring the floor in the rest of the basement my sitting area will improve even more. Then the tours can begin.

What do you observe for draft and stack temperature during a "long burn"?Townsend wrote:Set up a Dwyer Magnehelic and set for about .035 for draft at idle. Also, put in a nice temp gauge for the smoke pipe.
