What are the aquastat settings? How well does the chimney draft?

It needs more air then that at 4 teeth feed.
Did you take over fire as well as smoke pipe draft readings? Do you have a barometric damper installed? So many questions need answering here before we can help.

4 to 4.5 air is fine for 4 teeth on rice. Does the boiler bump the high limit when running on the timer? What do you have for a chimney setup? Ever checked the draft with a gauge?

Summertime setting 160 Low 200 high 10 diff timer 3 minute once a hr depending on coal 4 minutes ever hr
3 0r 4 teeth feed 3.5 to 4.5 air depending on what coal your burning you might have to increase or decrease air
Once you figure out what the coal likes you can play around with settings Also how your chimney drafts will determine
how low you can go with feed & air settings you may be able to go down 2 teeth feed

Here is a Manual for 520 settings are on last page 24 it is a guide base line to start with once you get use to the operation on your set up you will be able to play around with settings and find out what works for your set up It is not
writing in stone that you have to go with exactly with what it on the chart But is a good start not all Anthracite is the same so not all settings or setups will be the same

I always forget that most people burn rice instead of buck in EFM's.

Overfire and breech draft needs to be measured with a manometer, air can be adjusted accordingly.

Thanks for all your help, Just started fire again at 8am (high 200 low 150 diff 10 )(3min per 1/2 hr) 2 teeth 3 air, its 3pm and its still going .
BOILER TEMP AT 153 not useing any hot water. I'm just trying to keep it running with timer.I dId not take any draft readings at all. What kind of gauge do I need ,and where can I get one and should I set up a manometer somewhere . Thanks again This is all new to me Also this is set up im my garage and my chimney is 15 feet high from ground 10 feet high from stove pipe I plan on extending chimney 5 more feet. Do you guys agree or can I leave it at 15 feet high

Add as much height to the chimney as you can afford.

I have had great results with 4 teeth, 4 air, and 2/30 min on the timer. 2 teeth is pretty "light" on the feed...do have problems with the boiler running hot?

Draft readings are critical to the boiler's operation. Read all about manometers:

coal berner: what are your winter time settings. Now at 4 teeth 4.5 air 2min per 1/2 hour. manometer settings are (-.02 at fire door) ( - .04 at stack) .Just raised chimney to 16 feet, had to bring in outside air for boiler. I have coal/ oil 520 efm . Dryer was taking air from boiler shutting down oil gun. I want to run all coal . I just started coal fire, hope it stays alive high set at 200 low at 160 (10 diff ) nobody home durning day .I hope it dosen't temp up to 200 shutting down timer this is all knew to me hope I did the right thing, going back to coal like my parents had. Thanks for all your help on here

If the boiler has plenty of make-up air and the chimney continues to draft well, you should have no problems. My only suggestion is to back off the air a little and monitor the burn. It might burn just fine with the air at 4 or 4.25.

Running the air at 4.5 won't hurt anything, I was just pointing out that it might be more than you need.

The best way to set the air is to load the boiler and make the stoker run for at least 30 minutes...then look at the fire while the stoker is running. It should have a ring of ashes about 1.5-2" wide around the edge of the pot. How much air you need to achieve this ash ring can vary with the coal characteristics.

I run a little extra air during the summer to minimize unburned coal in the ashes, but the feed/air settings in the EFM manual work good for me during the heating season.

I will try that thanks .Do I need to have a black spot of unburned coal in center of pot. I just can't get it at 4 teeth is that ok
