Hand Fed Coal Boiler: Burnham number series 17

Ok here's a picture of my boiler, finally. We tore it out of a farmhouse in the fall of '78. Our house was just starting to be built. The basement was dug out, the footers were poured, and the cement blocks were stacked in the basement. The boiler was in the back of my '54 f 100. My brother hooked his truck to mine and lowered me down the bulldozer ramp. That's how we got it in the basement. Dennis

Nice Pinto! Always good to have soft landing when your talking about boilers.

What is that thing next to the boiler? Some kind of heat exchanger?

Sorry Don, I've been up in Potter county for a couple days.

Yes, it's a big heater, about 12" x 30". It made hot water for an elementary school. I wish I would have asked pop more about it. He removed it in the 1970's. It had a couple of pinholes in the copper tubes. I have it piped to the boiler in 2"IPS.

Hand Fed Coal Boiler: DS 100 Coal/Wood bolier

Post by bcdex » Fri. Jan. 08, 2016 1:36 pm

First year using my new DS 1100. It's a indoor coal/wood boiler and so far it has been keeping our house around 70 deg. I got the coal burn pretty good, now when the coal burns out, I'm going to load it with wood and play with it for a week or two just to get the hang of it. I want to see how long of a burn I can get with a load of wood. Also what to try out the secondary burn and see how it works.
They sell a lot of the DS 1100's but I can't find anyone on line anyplace that has one so I can compare notes and ideas. If you know anyone with the 1100 or larger units, send them my way.

Thanks.

I hope to be installing a Coal Gun S260 in an old schoolhouse we are buying. Still waiting on closing but I'll try to upload pictures of my install. :) And I'm sure I'll be visiting here plenty for advice especially since I've never burned coal before

Welcome to the forum cowboy,

An S260 should do well in an old schoolhouse.

Well, technically this was new December 31, 2015. But I am just getting around to adding it to this thread.

This is a BairMatic boiler with a Van Wert VA-400 stoker than I stuck into it.

The BairMatic boiler has the heat exchange plates right above the fire. A lot of other stoker boilers have most of the heat exchange surface in the exhaust side of the boiler. I think this "plates above the fire" design would be really good for a steam boiler.

Don't worry, it's still September. In a few weeks there will be a whole bunch of new boilers to look at!

Hey Don
I like it. But how well do these pot smokers idle for long periods of time? My Keystoker does a great job. I'm would think the coal would burn all the way to the bottom.

I've been running it all summer for DHW. Timer is 2 minutes every hour. If there is a DHW call from the indirect water heater it will miss a timer cycle or two due to the temperature being over the high limit. This never causes an outfire. We had a power outage a few months ago for more than 8 hours. 20 minutes after the power came back on, the fire was completely recovered, I was amazed!

In general they idle nicely due to the depth of the coal in the pot. Timer cycles add fresh coal to the bottom of the pot, so the fire stays where it belongs.
