Well. it's been over a year but here is the 1987 Van Wert VA-600 I installed in my basement back in July of 2017. I had a spare fire door so I cut a square hole in it and mounted a piece of wood stove glass in it. It has provided hours of entertainment over the past year.

Don: I realize that it's been around 16 months since you posted these photos, but I wanted to know if you'd be willing to share more information about how you went about cutting and mounting that window into the front of your Van Wert VA-600?

Nice job  ~ HandLogger

The door is just aluminum, very easy to cut. I used a 5" x 5" piece of wood stove glass and cut the hole in the door a little smaller than 5" x 5". Two 5" long pieces of 3/4" flat stock with some flat rope gasket hold the glass in place. They are attached with 2 small bolts each.

S130 install completed. Boiler is in a detached boiler house built for this with 4 tons of on site storage, dump zone in the concrete pad below the boiler house, 1 zone currently running with room to expand 3 more zones.

Other than just a bit of electrical work to tighten up and wiring up the heat traces, we are fully operational now. :D :D :D

Ya done good there CG!
See I'm not the only one using channel/strut for pipe mounts. ;)
No need for galvanized pipe and fittings...closed loop water is soon void of any oxygen so no way for black pipe to ever rust from the inside. Check if you like, I think the zinc from galvanized in closed loop hydronics isn't all that good either...

Galvanized will tend to scale up more and it doesn't "play with others well." It isn't real happy with dissimilar metals. The way it is galvanized, hot dipped or plated makes a difference too but I can't remember which is preferable. I believe it may be the hot dipped that is the more desirable of the two.

Stoker Coal Boiler: DS Aquastoke

Post by Slvr98svt » Sun. Apr. 12, 2020 8:10 am

Figured while I had some free time at work I would create a login and post some pictures of my setup. Bought a house with a DS Riteburn in the basement. It wasn't quite up to the task of heating 2500 sq/ft and the previous owners had already helped me by installing tubing for the 2nd floor before remodeling the downstairs.

I happened to be near the DS plant on a work trip last year and liked the quality of the Riteburn so I stopped in for a tour of the plant and discussion on the Aquastoke. Purchased it and finally worked my way through installing it. Definitely could have seeked out a little more help but for the first year I think it worked alright.

I need to make a real hopper that I can feed from outside so I don't have to dump pails of coal in every 3-4 days and create dust in the basement. Tidy up some tubing and come up with a good way to empty the ash pan. It's plenty large enough for emptying when filling twice a week, but ash containment while pulling it out and carrying to the door is non existent.

Anyway here are a few pictures of the old and new. Again I did this with little to no knowledge of boiler systems except for some reading on the internet.

Welcome to the forum,

WOW! Nice Aquastoke! Please keep us posted on how it works out. There aren't many on the forum. The fact that it is the first newly designed under fed stoker boiler in decades makes it very interesting!

Welcome. Nice looking boiler - but it is missing something important (at least in the picture). Please put a down pipe on your pressure relief valve.

Thanks everyone and I will definitely be in touch on filling from outside.

The relief has since been remedied. You know, get in a rush to start using it and things get left undone.

After 5 years, I got my ah260 running. Money has been tight, but I kept going one piece at a time. Had to put it outside,as my chimney is shot, 1862 farm house, no insulation. Running heat exchanger to oil. Glycol in coal boiler loop. So far so good. Will add circ pump to keep core temp of oil boiler up.

Congratulations, JK! We will also be slowly putting together a new [to us] CSB this year, so your nice photos are very inspirational.

I see that you built a detached boiler room? Are you using Glycol in your boiler loop to prevent freezing?

Nice Job!

yes, I have glycol in coal loop. To save money, I was going to pipe to oil boiler direct, but that would be 50 gallons of glycol, way to expensive, especially if I had an issue and lost it. I ran 2 rehaue pipes, so 1" pex in parrell for both return and supply, as I need 180,000 btu thus the ah260. so far so good, but I need to add a dump zone, non powered in the shed. will post more pics later. I must say this site has been the inspiration to keep me going and switch to coal.
