Yes, I can get the ash pan out , its a tight fit but its the old number 3 washtub as per supplied by ahs I think.. my low water cut off is a taco, I ordered it and then noticed its only for 7.5 amps,, I have not tried to use it, but its in the water in a fitting near the top of the boiler supply.

- Stoker Coal Boiler: Van wert
- Coal Size/Type: rice
My ex in laws ran a huge plumbing co in Hazleton. I now live in Elizabethville . In 76 when we bought this 18 room home, we were burning over 5,000 gal of oil to make steam and it was still cold. Once oil got to a dollar, my in laws were selling Van Werts. On day at the factory, Van Wert was cleaning house we got a new Van Wert stocked with a NOS Simplex boiler 600,000 bts or 1750 sf of steam. We removed the old Losch conversion and installed the Van wert. In the following years , being a building restoration contr. We did a lot to this huge brick home. Including making wood storms for most of the 60 + windows. Insulated ceilings since walls cannot be done. Adding and moving radiators and making the system better. We routinely burn 18 tons of rice coal. The bin holds appox 12 tons and the aluminum hopper appox 3/4 of a ton. I used to load the hopper with a 5 gal bucket but bought a 16ft grain auger and ran that to the bin to fill. I have it on a timer but I can never slow it down enough so I generally fill it with the auger as I take out the ashes. It only takes me 5 min a day. I once Calculated I have saved over 1/4 million dollars burning coal vs oil over the last 40 years. BTW Its only been out of fire 4 times in 40 years 3 times due to broken sheer pins.

Additional Van Wert pics. The tank in the back is my well tank. the 4" black pipe is the downspout inlet I cut in and out with the seasons. There is a 6ft wide 35 ft deep well under the coal box. I found it by accident 40 yrs ago running floor drains. I installed a shallow well pump in it and use it to water my lawn. Taking out 1 to 2 bucket of ashes every day, its very hard to keep the area clean. I vacuum the basement about every 6 months. I tried fans and vacs nothing seems to work and after 40 years I just live with it. The ceilings are all insulated and dry walled so no dust get into the house.
I do on occasion get a bit of wet steam that makes no sense. I installed a 4ft cabinet radiator on my porch with an 1.5" line and no vent and it never heats up more than a few sections. I re did it 3 times using larger pipes and shorter runs but the results are always the same.

That timer shoots Sparks inside the mercury bulb each time it fires... Kind of unsettling if your used to more modern components. How about that aquastat? A museum piece that still works like the day it was installed 55 years ago.

That Aquastat is one of the good ones with the old style snap switches. The seem to hold up better than the newer style.
Old style New style. -Don
