Maybe the coal became more efficient.
In 2008 I put a Harman Mark III in service (we heat approximately 3000 SF with a (2) 9'X7' garage doors facing the Northwest wind) and used just about six tons. In 2012 I upgraded to a Harman SF250 with no other changes except a new metal roof and I've been struggling to empty my outdoor shed of it's annual 4 tons every year since.
I get my supply from Superior every Fall. Go figure!

The coal could be part of it, but last year I burned up 2500 lbs of Kimmel's rice and did not notice an increase in consumption...just an increase in ash and a sulfur smell outside.

All of you have failed to give credit to 1 issue....
2 BTU gains....
1- 6 yr old boy..
2-4 yr old boy...
Those 2 boys houncing & bouncing in the house makes more extra heat than they use with the little hot water they use.
Add 2 more & save another ton of coal.

When my son was 3 years old a friend of ours was visiting and made mention of needing money to buy something. My son spoke up and said "You just go down to that Broadview Savings. They'll give you lots of money!". If only it was that easy.
Just a heads up depending on you annual income you can get a free energy audit through New York State. I had one done a few weeks ago they pointed out what I should take care of first. Just a thought

And for the fridge, it's "Why close the door? There's still edible stuff in there, and I'm not finished yet."windyhill4.2 wrote: ↑Fri. Mar. 16, 2018 9:51 pmI didn't think they would do that until in their teens....

I see nothing wrong with having a energy audit done by a competent private company, and getting some form of reimbursement from NY. Unfortunately I don't qualify for anything like that, just lots of taxes.coalnewbie wrote: ↑Wed. Mar. 21, 2018 2:18 pmI am from the govt and I am here to help you ... Yeah right.

With all of the excitment going on in some of the other boiler threads, I did not want my EFM feeling left out. I looked real hard for something that needed an adjustment, but the darn thing is still running perfect since I flipped the switch in October. I gave the stoker a few drops of oil since I had the cover off, but it looks like it is back to the normal routine of taking the ashes out every few days. If it is lucky I will vacuum out the stove pipe in a few weeks.

I like the sound of that Rob. A dependable brand of machine to begin with and I know that your preventive maintenance is spot on. It is sad how many customers I have that do not take care of their heating equipment and then it lets them down when they need it the most. You are to be commended for the improvements you have made to your home that has kept your coal consumption down. No doubt you have one of the best heating systems in your area besides the rest of your family, one that others would be jealous of. I have re-read this thread several times and I enjoy it each time.
I really haven’t figured out what you and I are doing wrong. Several others have 40+ pages in their boiler thread and the two of us have 17 combined. Put coal in, take ashes out... glance at the gauges as I walk past on my way to the shower.
I guess I will just have to take another sip of Bourbon and keep reading about others having exciting times.
