Based on a my experience with a few EFM's using a flue shared with an oil boiler, there is no reason to hook them up any differently than a second oil boiler...other than the code that treats stoker boilers like a wood stove, which I find ridiculous.

I'm not sure why a shared flue with different fuels is not allowed, but you can share a flue using the same fuel is ok. All the examples I 've seen of that rule don't explain why. I like to be able to find the reasoning behind it, like I found with how they rate stove's and stove pipe's the allowable distance to combustibles.

The boiler itself was made by Fitzgibbons Boiler Company. I think it holds about 13 gallons more water than a regular 520. Maybe if you were running the stoker really hard the larger boiler would have an advantage, but heating a house on 4/5 teeth is a pretty easy task for any EFM. I could have just as easily put a 350 in dad's house and had heat to spare.ben wrote:Question. Is the highboy designed to have more boiler water content? I don't think they make them anymore.

Yes, they are tube boilers. All else equal the larger heat exchange surface promotes efficiency, though the larger size of the boiler may also contribute to greater stand-by losses. The larger reservoir of hot water in the boiler also can be beneficial for DHW production, etc.
