They are all inside now except one for the 2nd floor that I need help with. We'll see how the plumbing progresses.

Yesterday after I had the chimney brushed I shut off the power to the EFM and the draft inducer. The flue "dead ends" in the cellar, that means it ends where the opening for the smoke pipe is. I have a tee there, I went in and vacuumed out all the fly ash. There was a lot, been a few years since the last cleaning. The draft is noticeably better, I suspect there was a lot of fly ash that had collected at the bottom of the flue. When I was done I started the draft inducer, forgot to switch the boiler back on. It was probably around 2 PM. At 6:30 I turned up the kitchen t-stat. Nothing happened. I ran down onto the cellar and switched the EFM back on. After a bit a little flame popped up out of the fire pot.
I ordered the caps online from http://www.chimcapcorp.com, I was trying to find the best caps available, they seem very sturdy. Shipping was fast, had them in 2 days.
They answered my emails promptly, both caps and the leg kit were just under $200 with shipping.

Amazing how long these thing hold a fire despite us turning them off and forgetting about them!

That's the longest I've ever let it go. Usually when I clean the boiler I don't loose the fire, but that is an hour tops. I never imagined it could go that long. There was a very good draft, it was breezy out and I did have the inducer running. I wonder how much longer it could have gone?

I had written how much better the boiler flue was drafting after the cleaning, attributed it to flyash buildup. BUT.....

I installed the new chimney caps on the front chimney, one flue is for the boiler, the other for the Fisher wood insert. I moved the old cap (Homesaver brand) to the chimney for the Harman. Since I lit the stove 9 days ago the baro is not opening nearly as much as it has in the past. In the cold that chimney drafts like a vacuum cleaner. Now the baro is more lazy, even with the high winds.

It's not a problem because the stove is operating fine, just interesting how that cap made such a difference. It's the cap shown in an earlier post laying on the ground before I cleaned it.

I have found the same thing with chimney caps. They really knock the draft down. If you have draft to spare it's not a problem. If your draft is marginal, it's better not to use a cap.

I was quite surprised to see the baro not reacting the was I was used to. The chimney drafts well, it's about 2.5 stories, chimney block with a 6X6 liner, was built for the range that was once in the kitchen years ago.

It's gone out!!! Lost the fire today.

I was thinking I should switch on the draft inducer this morning but I didn't listen to that little voice again. This afternoon the temperature hit the upper fifties, I knew it wasn't gonna be good. The big old chimney is still very cold. Got home and opened the cellar door and heard the stoker running. No draft at all. The fresh coal didn't make it off the ash ring. Relighting shortly.

The Harman is at a half turn open on the air, on a low simmer. A few windowstats open.

Probably my own fault, as usual. It can be challenging keeping these things going in this mild weather.
