Can someone tell me what type of gear oil to put in the reducing unit? Should this be completly filled to the top plug in the unit?

This is the newer smaller style reducing unit, not the larger older type.

The cubic style, gray gearboxes are filled from the manufacturer with a lifetime synthetic oil. You will see an allen plug just below the midpoint of the shaft, half way UP the box on the fire door side of the box. Fill to that point. Pour oil through the breather hole on top.

Should I just use a synthetic gear oil? Any ideas on the weight of the oil that should be used? I'm rebuilding my unit. The boiler was built 11-1981.

The gear oil we use is synthetic. Non-synthetic 90W might be too heavy.
