Does It Make Sense to Burn Coal in My Fireplace?
I know this has been done. A wood fire in my fireplace will efficiently heat my small 2 bed ranch. But, i'd like to be able to throw some coal on (if possible) before going to bed at night, to keep the heat going throughout the night. Can anyone give me any advice? And, of course, any comments on health and safety are greatly appriciated.

You can burn wood or cool in a insert. You won't get anthracite coal to burn good in a fireplace ...Maybe Bituminous coal will I really don't know about that??

Wont work with anthracite. Salting a Wood Fire (in Fireplace) With Coal
I know bit coal from western Pa will burn on a fireplace grate. I have burned 2 or 3 baseball sized lumps at a time on a home made grate in a 5 gal bucket in my deer stand. I don't know if it will help out much burning in a fireplace.
