We have a prefab fireplace that we only use a handful of times throughout the year, mostly for ambiance. Of course my C40 takes care of the heating!! There is a fresh air intake on the outside of the house connected directly to the firebox. The previous owners put an exhaust vent on instead of an intake vent. I’d like to change it to the proper setup. I’m puzzled about if air intakes are spring loaded closed, or are they always open? All my research shows open air intakes. If it’s just an open vent than I could see bugs getting in and becoming a nuisance. Especially bees!!

A flapper door that goes in...
A reverse dryer vent plus the screen will do...

Thanks CC. I’ll head out to the store tomorrow and see what I can find.

The stock combustion air inlets have a screen on the backside to keep bugs out but they are otherwise open.

Thanks CK. I just called a company that bought out Superior fireplaces. I spoke with the rep and they sell the factory intake kit for my fireplace which includes the exterior hood and flex line. A bit pricey at $104. The hood is always open like you said. I wasn’t sure if they are made with dampers that close when not it use. My plans are to keep the vent I have, just remove the flapper and install a screen on it. Call it a day!!! Thanks for all the input.
