At $2 a gallon for crude heating oil is way overpriced. Shouldnt be more than a $1 or so over the price of crude. No road tax of 76c a gallon like gasoline and still it $2 more than Gasoline.
You're right! When a lot of distributors started selling the ULS diesel garbage as heating oil it got thrown into all the gamed crap that goes on with that. The ULS heating oil isn't even required in Pa. although they lowered the levels a bit a few years ago. In NY state it is required. I've read of claims by New England dealers about distributors creating fake shortages to jack it up.

In Pa., the last 3 big tax increases on road gasoline were put in over only 4 years. Technically, those 3 increases compounded, are assessed at the distributor level and not at the pump. Like all the rest of the state and fed tax. So guess where that cost gets passed to. When it's asked how much Pa. gasoline taxes are per gallon, they conveniently omit the 33% or so at the wholesale level. That makes them look like they're only about the 5th highest in the USA, instead of actually being the highest.

Its a bargain compared to the $6 gallon it was 2 weeks ago.

Your right its no bargain in general. Last oil i bought it was $2.50 a gallon for a rental 2 yrs ago.For myself the last oil i bought was $1.20 a gallon and that was in 2002. And that was too much at the time compared to other fuels.

The bargain right now is Nat gas ($10 Mbtus)for some areas. In my area it is cheaper than coal($16Mbtus) and about half the cost of Geothermal Heat pump ($18.65Mbtus)at .21c aKWH. I realize Nat Gas is not the same price in other areas.

My oil dealer is still at $3.90/gal. Oil boiler @ 86% eff. vs. handfired coal @ 60% (optimistic estimate). Current break even is at $485/ton for coal.

At one time there was a steam heating company in Reading, Pa. Reading Steam heat co. They ran several huge steam boilers and piped to many buildings. Likely, coal fired, as far as I recall. In business from 1880's to 1969 or so. Not everyone used it, but they had 10's of thousands of subscribers. I believe the heating charge was $8 a month. They had a fire in 1967 and brought in two steam locomotives to temporarily provide steam. Refired the main boilers and hobbled along for a couple more years. They needed a $ million for line repairs and couldn't get it.

No. 2 heating has dropped to $2.91/gal on Jan. contract. My oil dealer is at $3.50/gal. now. Using proper efficiency levels for comparison, that brings my break even equivalent to coal right at $440. a ton. Of course, oil price can go anywhere.
