Because these stoves have leaky doors, they run cleaner than an airtight stove with restricted air.
A firebrick lining and a baffle with secondary air at the front edge would improve things still more. Meeting current standards would mean a lot of experimentation, and probably the use of a catalytic converter.
Pellet stoves burn clean because they have uniform fuel, uniform feed, and uniform air. all hard to accomplish with wood log fuel.
