Where is the ideal location for a barometric damper when two oil fired units are in series on a single chimney thimble?

My oil fired hot water heater and oil fired hot air furnace share a thimble and flue.

As it is now the HWH is closest to the thimble then the baro then the furnace.

Thoughts?

Hi Scott.

Not sure they would allow that around here. Both would need a separate flue, but if they’d both fit into the same thimble, I’m not sure why they’re require separate flues.

Waiting to read other responses about the baro.

As far as location, it should be in the middle of a long straight run. And there should be one for each appliance. That said, I don't think you're going to get a 2 into 1 stovepipe deal past inspection. You could power vent one perhaps?

I don't see why there would be anything wrong with two oil units in one flue as long as everything was sized appropriately.

Each appliance should have its own baro, and be connected to a common stove pipe that is sized for both appliances.

The house passed inspection when it was built this way in 1995.

I’m going to replace my furnace this summer myself and wanted some input.

In my mind the baro would be “after” both units (assuming each requires the same draft) IOW...

Thimble
Pipe
HWH
Pipe
Furnace
Baro

I’ll post a picture this afternoon.

You aren't regulating chimney draft, you want to regulate the draft on an individual appliance. Here's a link to Field Controls contractors info. Scroll down and click on the PDF.

Perfect...thank you! When I install the ne w furnace I’m going to re-pipe both units so I’ll install a baro for the HWH as well.
