GORHAM — As the weather cools, the smell of wood smoke is filling the air across Maine, along with fine particles inhaled into the lungs of those who live nearby.

Despite its tradition and appeal, heating with wood sends tons of particulate airborne, contributing to respiratory illness. That’s why the federal government has slowly been limiting emissions for a range of wood heaters, tightening the design standards in 1988, 2015, and now, for 2020.

It took three years to design and test the updated version of Jotul’s popular F 500 Oslo, one reason why it costs $600 more than the previous model. Many people buy wood stoves to save money, so will they balk at the new $3,499 retail price?

My question is how and does this affect us?

Awful that hard working people who are not lazy. That heat their homes with a fire. Have to put up with standards that people with no sense of reality come up with.

there are going to be some huge sales in the weeks before the new year. Im betting they tweek the law to allow them to sell ones made before 2020 but maybe not. It will increase the demand and price of older stoves a little bit and lessen the sales of new ones.

People must have been dropping like flies back when I was young.....we didn't get oil until 1967 and then ran wood stoves to keep it from running......14 cord per winter. Amazing we survived as a species.

In Ma a retailer gets fined if they don't junk the old stoves...
Can't have the pre 2020 emission stoves on the floor for sale...

This has no effect on coal burners, just wood stoves.

I wonder where wood and/or coal stoves stand. Does this mean if you are burning coal you are compliant but wood not so or does it mean that the stove is banned totally because it could burn possibly wood.

You can't burn coal in these new stoves, it will destroy the catalyst.

Great question. I was thinking the same when I posted.

It's almost that time and I typically start the season of with wood. As it's not that cold.

It's very Good to be informed that a Renewable Fuel Source was going to kill Us All,and the EPA has taken the time to Save Us All from it! Wood Kills! Burn Coal! Now,if those Flakes in California would just start finding a way to Switch Off those Massive Wildfires, they could really lead the way to a New Green Day!!

$3500 for a wood stove?

this will make earlier generation stoves all the more valuable.

More like cash for clunkers...
Stores will get a bounty for destroying old stoves...
Coal stoves will get caught in the mayhem...
Hopefully sanity will prevail...
In some parts...

Some are higher than that, Harman specifically...by the time you pay their hidden fees...installation...which is really a removal of old stove fee...piping, not to mention they want a chimney inspection done before installation and any and all costs associated with that, then a hearth inspection to meet codes...most Harmon dealers won’t install unless everything is perfect...add it all up the price is “the sky is the limit”.

A friend of mine just bought a Harmon pellet stove. Big money...nearly $3700 for the stove...except his wife works for a dealer...who allowed them to self install. Cost them $1600 for the stove. Talk about mark-up rip off of regular “Joe Consumer”.

I don’t begrudge anyone of making money...that’s the American way. However, some folks/business people have no ethics in my mind.

Most MFG also offer burn credits to the dealer...
So the demo stoves at the end of the season...
Can be discounted...
Or someone returns a stove because it was too big...
Or not big enough...
Many ways to skin that cat...
If you know the right dealer...
