Hi,

I just bought a house and it has a Weil-McLain boiler, of unknown age, but still operational. We will have to replace it eventually with something more efficient. Can anyone here help me identify the model and approximately how old it might be? Thanks very much.

Looks like some kind of gas conversion don't it? really solid looking boiler.....

It appears to be an old coal boiler converted to gas. Notice the Bryant burner mounted where the ash door used to be. Look around and see if you can find the parts that were removed. Ash door, grates and shaker mechanism.

Does that say series R on the large door in the middle?

Yes, it does look like this says R-series. It is a natural gas fired boiler currently. Not sure if it's steam or hot water-- we haven't moved into the house yet. Thanks.

I do not see a steamtrol with a pigtail or an automatic water level regulator with a sight glass mounted on this boiler in the second picture.

If this is a hot water boiler it is entirely possible that you have a gravity hot water heating system and an open to air expansion tank in the attic and a vent pipe that is plumbed through the attic.They are very simple to use and own and operate.

I do not see any circulators or pressure gauges in the pictures that you have provided so I am going to guess it is a low pressure gravity hot water system and you have an open to air expansion tank in the attic.

We need to see more pictures of the boiler from the opposite side and above it to see the pipes connected to the boiler itself. We also need to see the radiators and thermostat as that will provide us with a large amount of information as to the type of heating system you have there.

I removed a boiler like that 2 years ago and it had a date of 53 on it. If I have to venture a guess it is a late 40’s or 50’s model. If I recall the date was on the inside one of the sections.
