Other Heating: Mascot wood fire boiler 1980

Post by Carter’s HR » Fri. Nov. 02, 2018 9:28 pm

I have found a 1980 Mascot wood fired water boiler that looks like it was used for baseboard heat. I can’t seem to find any info for anywhere. I don’t know anything about the unit as it was found in a home that was purchased site unseen. Any help would be appreciated.

Took some pics of the boiler. I’m trying to decide if I should try to use, sell or scrap it.

It is a wood boiler...the very smokey & inefficient kind.

I have a wood-fired Mascot furnace just like that one, and have used it for at least 20 years. Don't recall what I paid for it new, but it was several hundred dollars, and I'm sure it paid for itself in savings on fuel oil within the first season.
I have the furnace installed as an extension of the same hot water loop as our oil furnace.
I improved efficiency by purchasing an 80 gallon insulated storage tank; the Mascot dumps water into that tank first, so when the house does not need the heat, it can build up a reserve of pre-heated water ready to go. I have a bypass set up so when the Mascot is not fired, I can shut off flow to the storage tank.
I also replaced the servo that opens and closes the damper in the front of the stove with a slightly more powerful one, and disconnect the power to it each spring when I stop using the stove.
Last year a crack developed in the 1/4" steel plate in the front of the stove, from the top of the door opening up to the bottom of the water jacket on the top of the stove, and it started dripping. I had that repaired this fall and have been using the stove all winter.
It is a simple stove, maybe not the most efficient, but works very well and has paid for itself many times over.
