All inefficient power plants are on the shutdown lists. There are many on the
list for 2018 forward.

I use Bit coal for heat because its efficient and relatively inexpensive . Been doing it
for over 40 years and haven't found a replacement.
Batteries are now coming into common usage and will be the key to make what was
otherwise unusable energy a valuable commodity . Some utilities now have excess
power and have to pay other utilities to take the excess power , but if storage was available
they would use this power in peak time periods , at a premium price.
You will see a major change in the power industry mix in the future because of new and
better technology . These are disruptive technology and will kill some industries and make
others flourish.
This topic is on electricity not coal , and how best to provide it in peak demand.

Nah CJ , I heard it from Germany first who are now mostly solar and their electric rates have now quadrupled. This is having a profound effect on the competitiveness of Ge products.
If your wealth depends on manufactured products then cheap energy is the cornerstone.

Yep, and even they realize coal is just great and is necessary. However, being lead by an idiot liberal they are trying hard to change. Energy prices have still skyrocketed

Utilities are replacing these old fossil fuel plants as quickly as possible but
the consumer rate has to be kept stable. They have to write off the cost
of these large capital investments , some of which have a decade or more
of life , but are obsolete , being replaced by non fuel power plants , with
battery storage.
Energy prices will not skyrocket but slowly increase as new plants come
online , the utility commissions in the states will control that.

As can be seen in this chart the cost (inflation adjusted) of electric is now
less than 1960 prices.
