WOW! Thank you. I have been burning wood for years, and I had never heard of a "Russian" fireplace, also known as a masonry fireplace. I Googled it, and found all kinds of fascinating information! Here is a quick weblink for anyone who is interested: http://www.grannysstore.com/Do-It-Yourself/masonr ... stoves.htm

I saw a masonry fireplace being built on Renovation Nation on Planet Green and I thought it was very fascinating on how the stone was set up so it could give off heat for hours long after the fire had gone out. Of course the first thing that ran through my mind was if something like this could be setup to burn coal? Anyone see anything like that setup for coal?

I don't know if you can burn coal in a masonry (Russian) fireplace design, but check out this weblink for the complete design of one: http://dnr.mo.gov/pubs/pub781.pdf

It is basically a big heat sink, I would think you could burn anything in it and it would work. With coal, the cleanouts are an absolute must. It seems to me the cost of it would far exceed the cost of a decent coal appliance though and I would not want the cleaning chore. Sealing the cleanouts I would think is a critical component, goof there and you will cold as a stone.

I wouldn't think the clean outs would be to much of a problem if it was built along the same designs as figure 3
**Broken Link(s) Removed**. I suppose the key would be getting the grates and the air underneath them set up properly.
One giant heat sink that could be made to look very beautiful in ones home.

The first picture in the gallery is absolutely amazing! I would love to have something like that in my living room! Burning wood or coal, it just doesn't matter. That structure is to die for!
