Heat Abuse ?

So my neighbor recently installed this Vermont Casting Dutchwest wood stove. And as you can see, it sits pretty far into the fireplace and his 10'x10' room doesn't seem to be getting as warm as I think it should. He does have a heat blanket blocking the old damper and a SS liner but I told him if he moves it out about 10" or so, it would make a huge difference. Will it in fact make much difference??? Will a fan on top help much?

Also, he seems to be going through a lot of wood. Even with the damper fully closed and the airflow on low, he loads the thing about every other hour. Albeit the stove is pretty small am I'm strictly a coal burner, I'm not sure how long his burn times could be.

Lastly, I found this listing on CL and am encouraging him to make the switch. As he loves the look for the Vermont Castings stove with the glass, I was wondering if this one would be a good "started stove" for him??

Thanks!!

I would move it out. Particularly if it does not rely upon a blower and is strictly radiant.

Looks like it is too far back in the fireplace.

He lost 4 sides of the stove to scrub heat off by stuffing it in there.

The coal stove in the ad is a V.C. Vigilant 2310 coal burner. On of the easiest to run and a great heater. I believe they are rated at 45,000 btu's. The one I have sits approx a foot away from my fireplace and does a a great job...I can cook on mine too if I like ;)

That's a good price as well...they have been discontinued but parts will be available for a while.

Ditto. $250 for a VC 2310 is a great price. Snatch it up before someone else gets it!!! It'll burn wood also. Not as well as coal but it's a decent wood burner.

Bargain for the coal stove.

If that fireplace is interior,I think it will not make much difference moving the stove out because the bricks will eventually warm and radiate heat..

If the fireplace is on an outside wall though, it will make a big difference.

Thank y'all very much for your feedback. Yes the stove is on an outside wall so we will get a "tee" and move it out ASAP. I also emailed the guy selling the VC2310. Would love to get my neighbor "hooked on coal".

Again, your opinions are much appreciated.

Regards,

Will

The flue on the VC 2310 is reversible to exit top or rear, which gives the alternate to go in above the fireplace if wanted.
