In my search for a Baltimore Heater, I ran across a local Craigslist listing for a cast iron fireplace insert.

The ad had very few details and no pictures. I responded by e-mail and asked for some pictures.

After receiving the pictures, although it appears to be designed more for wood than coal, and I plan to install a faux fireplace in my "Man Cave" project, I made an offer of $100.

To my suprise, the seller accepted my offer and I picked it up. The insert came out of one of the oldest Victorian homes in Honesdale, Pa. and was replaced with a gas insert.

It is in excellent condition for its age, and from the looks of it was rarely used. I haven't researched it yet, but I'm wondering if it could also burn nut or stove coal?

Nice find.
It looks like you can use it with coal, With the upper register you can give over the fire air,
and the lower one for under the grate.

Peter.

Paulie,
That looks like it was used very sparingly, WoW! I didn't see the flue(vent). Does it vent through the top, with or without a damper? Looks like a real nice heater.
Cheers

Thanks Peter

There are two flue controls also on the face of the fireplace. The top tee handle has an a notched rod, making it adjustable and controls the top front flue outlet. The lower knobs opens the lower rear main flue.

I was working a few weeks ago in your neck of the woods, at the Schuler facility, in Weingart If all goes well I may end up closer yet.

How far are you from the ports in Hamburg?

Any time the refractory cleans right up in under 5 minutes with a toothbrush leads me to believe the same thing. :)

Both flue vents open freely and seal up nice when closed.

Good morning Rev!

Since I have been working out of the area all summer, my original plan was to get caught up on the countless other projects that piled up while I was away.

When I unloaded the insert, a fleeing thought crossed my mind. Getting into bed after a long day, as tired as I was, I just couldn't fall asleep. Something about the detail in the casting bothered me .......... and I had to find out.

I grabbed my trusty bottle of "The must for rust" Krud Cutter, and gave the front door a spray. In a few minutes the over 100 years of stove polish melted away. Excited, I turned to the rest of it and started spraying.

:junmp: Just what I thought ...... The entire front of the cast iron fireplace was copper plated! Well you know what that lead to....... Gotta put a quick coat of stove polish on at least the door before I go back to sleep.

Well its now 9am, and I think it's time for a nap :hammer:

I honestly wouldn't have posted that one because it appeared to be for wood only.

And although I've never burned Anthracite, I agree with him.

Nothin beats a try, but a failure. :)

I think it will do very well with anthracite as long as you can seal the lower portion air intake around the edges. Needs an ash pan or shovel ash gently.

Because so much is inside the fireplace it depends on a long fire to heat the mass of the fireplace to really feel the heat which will be gentle, but a lot. After several days burning you will instantly feel the radiant heat on entering that room.

Ash will build on those ledges which I would ignore because it will insulate the fire pot better. I suspect you will be pleasantly surprised at how well it will burn.

I like very much how the fire pot sides are spaced away from the side walls.

If you mean Hamburg Germany, I estimate 400Km.

I did not see the lower flue outlet it's amazing.
