Ok, not coal related...well maybe a little bit.
Since I burn sumped kerosene in my DHWH I decided to keep track of it's consumption. Back on 11/30 I topped off my oil tank right to the bottom of the unused bung. Today I topped it to the same level using almost 6 five gallon cans. I had to use the heat for a couple days to skim coat a crack in the Crawford 40's refractory, so let's just say a gallon a day for DHW.
That's not bad considering I'm running kero and I have two teenage daughters!
I could insulate the DHWH but I think that not having it insulated and letting that heat escape, keeps my pipes from freezing in the winter as I have O/F forced hot air heat and it hardly ran at all during last year's hard winter.
The Crawford really saves me money!

I have the same bock O/F DHWH and I topped off the oil pig 5 or 6 weeks ago and it appears I've used 30 something gallons, me and the Mrs.,a 7 yr old bath tub swimming champ and MIL... about a gal/day. The Vigilant saves me big time

Those Bock water heaters are awesome if you have access to free/cheap fuel, but for an average household they cost about $100 per month to run.

The only time we can get the bill down is if they shut off lights
I paid .15 cents a pound delivered for my coal this year. At $2.54 per gallon that oil is now that equals about 17 lbs of anthracite. I wonder how many pounds a day a coal fired DHWH would burn to equal my Bock?
