Well my son and his wife and baby moved into the cottage we've been working on since July. I offered them a free Jotul507 coal stove but they are both greenies and do not want to burn coal. You try to raise them right but there is only so much you can do. Anyway he bought a used Harman P38 pellet stove off of Craigslist. That stove really kicks ass. Their place is small, 800 sq. ft. He has to run the stove on the lowest setting and he gets a day and a half out of a 40# bag. Not too bad.

Yeah, wood pellet stoves are cool. As long as you get a good one. The cheap ones like Home Depot sell don't seem to produce heat very well. I don't think the heat transfer is very efficient. The better models do produce very good. I have an old Breckwell model fireplace unit. I like to use it during early fall and late spring.

A fireman friend of mine had a P38. Had one hell of a chimney fire for something that isn't supposed to do that.

He had it vented into a chimney or the pellet vent had a fire? This one is vented horizontally out a side wall with pellet vent and then has a 4' vertical section. It also has a 2" fresh air kit installed.

Good idea on the 4' vertical. A recent fire in our area was reportedly caused by a vent from a pellet stove sending sparks into the leaves that had gathered around the exhaust port. Total loss to the tune of $750K.

Vented to a chimney. He claimed the cause had something to do with a bad printed circuit board.

Yeah I saw that. The other reason for the vertical section is if you lose power it will draft enough to keep smoke from backing out of the stove into the house.

I had a P38+ and it was total POS that broke down so many times I gave up. Good luck to you. The circuitry is based on the DVC and has many problems. The P68 which my son had was great.

Harman DVC coal stoker, direct vented as similar to all Harman wood pellet stove. DVC has since been discontinued.
