Since our June payment, we have been paying ~6.3% more for delivered electricity here in these parts of Ohio.

Where we were paying about $0.135 per delivered KWH, we are now paying about $0.1435 per delivered KWH.

I guess we'll be saving an extra 6.3% this winter. :D

Here is a side by side of my bills from Aug 2013 and Aug 2014.. I see that delivery charge on mine went up $.004 per KW since last Aug.. I also changed suppliers recently since they offered a fixed rate. The variable rate for this month last year was cheaper but that's not always the case. In March if I remember right it was $.16 per KW from the supplier!

lightning pays about $.134/KWH, what's $.10/kwh, your supply alone?

In parts of the midwest with 80-90+% coal fired generation, the retail residential cost of power is around $.08/KWH. Northeast transmission, supply, and environmental regs make your rates what they are.

Additionally, "deregulation" (decoupling of the generation from the transmission/distribution) eliminated the pressure to keep production costs down. When a generator shuts it's base load coal fired plant and builds a gas plant at higher capital and production cost, it's because it's easier for them to not deal with coal and associated regulations (read: easier, NOT cheaper long-term). They don't care too much about cost because the distributor buys the power for whatever amount, makes its regulated profit and then passes both costs on to the consumer.

Just got the latest bill, and the delivered rate is now up 7.5% from our May and earlier bills. Is this due to coal being phased out? Where will it stop?

Larry you w/ FE Solutions?

They at times offer Discounted and Locked in rates for several years at a time.

I best look at my bills, cause they better not be mess'in round.

We're getting whatever Ohio Edison (a division of FE) gives us. We never opted to change providers.

Then it's FE Solutions.

Sniff around on-line and see if there is any savings w/ a commitment to staying a couple years longer.
Sorry, we do not have an electric generation offer available in your area at this time.
I did get my deal ahead of the coal debacle of late...so maybe they're not so generous anymore. :|

This smells a wee bit bad:

Larry.....Whatever caused you to not make a decision is in the past. When you didn't choose a provider and contracted for rates and terms for a contract period, you ended up with Ohio Edison, not First Energy Solutions as your"Provider Of Last Resort". That kept Folks from being stranded without power. It appears that FES has pulled out of the Residential Market, and is honoring existing Contract Terms until they they reach the Termination date. It's my understanding that there will be no more Contract Offers available. Is your Community part of NOPEC? If so,get info from them on Contract Terms and Pricing. NOPEC is an aggregate Group of Municipalities,Villages and Townships that have formed a Major Sized Bulk Buying Entity in order to get favorable terms and rates for it's Citizens......................................................................Get Going,Mister!

The surcharge for customers would come after May 1, Francis said.
Right after May is when I noticed things going up. I guess I need to figure out how to lock in with another provider.

I see where NOPEC offers 6% off of the "price to compare" (which I assume is the First Energy Solutions price) on a variable basis. They also offer fixed rates. Which do you feel is better?

UPDATE: The "Price To Compare" on our current bill is 7.22 cents per KWH. That appears to be just about exactly 50% of the delivered cost of our electricity. The NOPEC fixed rate deal is for 7.70 cents per KWH, which is higher, but it is locked in until January of 2017.
