Many friends and acquaintances are posting on Facebook that wood pellets have become totally unavailable in a huge radius around Olean NY.. They are looking to borrow electric space heaters from anyone who can afford to spare them. We have 10 below zero forecast for Monday night again. Unbelievable!!

That's a shame that they can't get pellets. I hope they find alternative heat.

My sister purchased a Harman P68 last fall. After I installed it, I made her buy 3 skids of pellets right away because I've heard of shortages towards springtime . As of yesterday she had 34 bags left.
I originally wanted her to get 4 skids, looks like 3 just may finish the year for her.

It's not just NY. There is a lot of scrambling going on looking for pellets.

Here also. None to be had, anywhere. Prices are steep, too. Some dealers do have reserves for pre-buy customers and those folks were very smart. Paid for, under cover, and safe. PPPPPPP..........

This is not a good situation. The next week is going to be bitter cold, and folks that didn't plan ahead will be scrambling. Seasoned firewood is impossible to find, pellets are running short, and now retailers are starting to sell out of bagged coal in my area. Dealers order a certain amount for the season, and most don't like to order a TT load late in the winter and sit on half of it through the summer.

Short on The Cape...
Friends have a TT load on the 10th...
Makes for a long wait...
They are limiting sales to regular customers...
And even limiting the # of bags to those who did not pre-buy...

I have had 3 calls this week from people looking for pellet fuel. When I started 6 yrs ago I had thought about selling pellets but there was too many places selling at that time. My coal sales have been brisk and it's looking like I may sell out of almost all full skids. Last year I had 30 bags of rice left, 1 full skid nut, 4 skids of pea(only because customer didn't take his order) and part of a skid of stove. I took 2 orders for next Saturday already. It's too late in the season to order another TT load. The last TT load is almost gone and its only been 2 1/2 weeks. I may have to put a limit on how much each customer gets so everybody is covered.

Pellets are still available around me and I see people offering them by the ton on Craigslist here. I know Im too far, but perhaps they could buy a semi-load from somewhere a little closer and split it up. It would still be cheaper then electric and they would be a lot warmer.

People have learned a little about being prepared this year.

Kinda makes 'Ya wanna open up a "Bob's Country Bunker" Mentality on the Old Seasonal Preparations Scenario. Folks that are smart and Blessed with Foresight&Financial Resources will remember this Winter. They'll spend a little more towards having Stock On Hand to get through an End To End Mauler like We've All been Experiencing.....It's not Radical,it's Reality....Getting ahead on better insulation for Your Structure is also a Gift That Keeps Giving......Money Out Is Money Out,So try to have something of Long Lasting Value for it having been spent. I find no pleasure in seeing Folks that laugh at us for the Coal Use now Suffering and being Cold....Teachable Moment for Them, and Us :gee:

I save a little money aside each week for this purpose. Last August I bought 8 tons because I had a feeling that having more was better than having less.. I am now saving for next Winters coal purchase.
I have plenty left, no worries.
The wood burning people across the road have been scavenging for wood. Over a solid foot of completely frozen, rock hard snow makes it hard for them.
You won't miss 10 or 20 dollars a week stuffed in the old Maxwell House Coffee Can so you can have the cash next Summer to buy your coal.

DK and I do the same thing. In addition we always get a half ton more then we think we will actually need. We figure at worst we'll have to store it over the summer. It's been working out well for us. Take care, Lisa

Good advice William and Lisa! Can't stress enough to those who are new coal burners this year. Get your winter supply in early summer. I set aside tax refund money for it, makes Obummer proud  ... Get an extra 20% worth of coal for good measure in case of a harsh winter again. As far as we're concerned, coal stays fresh forever..
