I have a fireplace that I use wood in. Coal stove in the basement is the workhorse. The fireplace is just for the enjoyment of an open fire, and the smell of a hardwood fire on a cold day. Plus the wood is free shy of my effort so why not.

i use the trick my buddy showed me. once you get a good coal fire going, you shove the biggest peice of wood. maybe even non seasoned wood. on top of you coal fire. helps keep it from crusting over. burns alot longer without trouble.

this is with bit coal.
