Welcome CL.

Home Comfort were one of the better kitchen stoves known as "ranges". Could be just a wood stove, or wood and coal depending on what type grates it has. We'd need pix of inside the firebox to know.

If it's set up to just be a wood stove trying to burn coal in it won't work well. If it's set up for coal, it can also burn wood.

The first few pages of this Cookin With Coal thread will tell you how kitchen ranges work. The rest of the thread will answer questions you didn't even think of yet. ;)

They always show up, ask questions, then leave. If they not knew how good a forum this place is.

The Home model is top of the line. They are a fairly complicated stove to restore . One example is the control for Bake/ Kindle. Most stoves have a 2 top 3 piece lever system of some sort. The Home Crawford has about 8 or 9 pieces in this unit. The upside is that no air is allowed to enter the stove when you go from Bake to Kindle or back. It is also the only stove that has the gears for the grates in a dedicated box that is not part of the stove itself. Crawford had a way of doing things differently from other companies.
The Home is a great stove and well worth restoration

Show us pictures of the grates. Where's Freetown Fred at asking this person where they're from? What is you often say, Fred??

I like the looks of this range, but I wish it had more shelves.

Yup. Condition of the grates is important because they are the heart of any stove. And type of grates is even more critical to a range.

That looks like a homemade grate to me and is useless for coal.

Is this in the firebox? It looks like it is in the oven.
