Is there a proper way to fasten the spark guard in the Glenwood no.8?
What did the factory use?

Likely they just dropped in a cotter pin at each end. It was a common fastener back then.

I just got a recast replacement from Wilson (nice piece btw) and I don't want it to fall off and get broken.
The only thing that I could get to fit thru the hole is a 1/8 in. stainless rivet. Do you think that would hold up under the heat?

As long as you don't overfill the firepot, up where that grill is it isn't hot enough to melt even mild steel. I have plain steel cotter pins holding the grill in my GW #6. The rivets should work also.
