Hand Fed Coal Stove: E M 118 no 49

Post by Mikeb » Fri. Oct. 14, 2022 5:35 pm

Hello,
New to the group and coal/wood heating world. I have an Etna Monitor 118 no. 49 dual fuel (I think) stove that I would like to restore and use. The stove was my grandpa’s and had been in my sisters barn since 1986. After I got it home I noticed a few cracks in the cast between the load door and the ash tray… is the stove junk? I see it can be removed and hopefully replaced. Would it be worth replacing? The stove is kind of important to me.

I'm guessing he meant pics of the entire stove.

I don't see any form of shaker. Looks like a wood stove. Take pics of inside stove. Especially piece with cracks.

I don’t really know what a shaker is, sorry I know nothing about this, I just love the stove.

Cracks are in the very first pic I posted. Hard to get a better picture.

It can be used. You need Mntbugy or one of the antique guys to tell you specifically what needs to be done. You line the cast part with refractory. I just don't know the specifics.

The round part at the bottom with the slide fork is the shaker mechanism. You pull the fork out to dump ash or clinkers. Wiggle or shake side to side to drop ash. There is a handle that goes onto the fork part.

If you search for some of the threads with reclining of the firepot, you may find what you need. Only concern I have is if lining firepot will provide enough protection for that cracked section. I mean I would be good with doing it, but I would ask you use good judgment as to the severity of that cracked spot. Maybe seek out another opinion from anonther antique burner.
