Hand Fed Coal Stove: Harman SF250

Post by -huntnh » Wed. Oct. 05, 2022 1:51 pm

Hello everyone, new guy here so please bare with me. I built a new house 3 years ago and installed a Harman sf250 that I "restored" (built in 1986) in the cellar which heated the whole house easily. My problem is at the beginning of last heating season I noticed a plate on top of my grates that must've fallen out of somewhere...I cannot for the life of me figure out where it goes. It is as wide as the stove (20"), about 2" tall, and roughly 1/4" thick. I had a lot of problems controlling the fire after that. Either over-firing or smoking out of the control knobs. All I can think is that this is some sort of baffle that fell out and is a critical part. I am willing to cut the top off to repair if i have to, but I'd like to be sure before I do. I wanted to install a damper to see if that would help make up for the difference of the plate not being there but never got to it before i was out of WOOD. Yes, I'm an outcast here and burn wood. :shifty: ANY insight would be greatly appreciated. Pictures coming soon. TIA.

Some pictures inside your stove might help you get detailed help with your specific stove although it sounds like your baffle may have rotted out and fell down.

Harm on is now Legacy stoves and they still build the SF250 last I checked. They are a sensor here I believe so if you give them a call I’m sure they could also assist you with what you need.

Someone here with your stove may be along shortly to help you as well.

Pics. attached, one of the stove, one of the mysterious plate that I found, and one of the firebox looking up towards the exhaust. The only thing I can think is someone put it in as a restrictor plate? Your guess is as good as mine.

You need to look at an owners manual.

Yep I bad Legacy owners manuals are NOT on their website.

Legacy…what is up with that??? Nearly every stove manufacturer out their, coal and wood provided owners manuals online…most for free.

Interesting…I just did a search on their website before I posted and looked several times. Anyway…there you go.

Thanks!

I have been through the manual a couple times, no mention of the mystery plate. I'm guessing someone added it aftermarket. The tag shows the stove was built in 1986 so it's been around a while. That being said I did add 2ft. to my chimney and it seems to be working well. Of course I have not had a real good fire yet to put it to the real test. Thank you for the manual, the one you linked is more in depth then the copy I have.

Kinda looks like a "DIVERSION" plate to keep the coal from getting hunk up in the back of the fire-box---& if necessary--just push coal from the front to back--can't really see the angle it's on. Just a shot in the dark!!!!

In second picture grate seems higher on the right. Third pic of plate, is that a weld in the middle or a handle? Could it have been tucked in up top of burn chamber to narrow the exhaust path? Did you look in through the clean out port on top to see if it was welded in there somewhere?

Yes it is just a weld in the center. I also thought that it could've been welded over the exhaust to narrow it, it's the only logical place it could have been. There is not enough room for it to have fallen from the top side where the clean out is. It was only welded in that one spot and it would seem if it was factory it would've been assembled better. The only thing is there is no way to have welded that plate in there after the fact, there's no possible way to get the torch in there to weld where it was welded. It only fits over the exhaust one way, which is with that weld being up inside the exhaust chamber. I cannot for the life of me figure out how it was in there other than that but it just doesn't add up for me...

Have you contacted Legacy yet? They still make that model and would likely have some suggestions...
