Hello!

I have a Cooperative Foundry Rochester NY 1885 stove.

Red Cross No 24

Is it worth the 200 I paid?

How hard is it going to be to refurbish it.

Any advice is welcome. Surface rust only, doors and vents all work.

I'ld say you did OK price wise. The real question is how are the guts? Grating, shaker mechanism, and the pot condition, along with any structural concerns. More pics of it opened up please. You know this is off season, and participation will be a bit low. There are some dedicated lifers, that I'm sure will help you along.
And welcome to "coal" burning. You won't regret it now that the democrats are in charge.

That's the right way to do it. A coal stove needs proper placement to be effective. Building around it, will make it perform at it's maximum capacity. Smart move.

Most likely a wood stove.

200 good price with them fancy ceramic tiles.

Take every bolt out. Some come right off. Some snap off, others need drilled out.Take lots of pictures so can remember how it goes back together.

Be extra super carefull around ceramic tiles.

Sandblast or wire wheel/brush all iron parts, whichever fits your budget. Both sides.

Paint inside and outside parts of stove. Stove polish the outside for a more gray look.

Seal all part seams with stove chalk/ furnace cement. Install new bolts. Build a small fire in stove to cure paint/cement. Do outside will stink/smoke some.

The top flowers part and hand bar thing on top gets brite nickel plating and door knobs. Cost $$$.

Will take awhile to do, as time permits.
