I just picked up an old Kalamazoo colonial coal stove - hand fed. I’m looking for any information I can find on the stove in general and possibly the assembly instruction if they exist. I intend on doing full restoration so it would help to know how it was assembled to take it apart. Thanks Ted

Welcome P.

I have two local friends that heat and cook with Kalamazoo wood burning kitchen ranges for many years. They are good stoves.

Here's a link to some of the history.

Me neither.

It is generally not good to hook a solid fuel stove to the same flu as an oil burner if used at the same time. Especially if burning wood.

I agree if used at the same time but that would not be the case, the plan is not to use the oil burner unless The coal fire should go out for some reason and the thimbal for the stove is above the furnace thimble - some before me must’ve had a wood stove piped in as there is residue on the block. I do intend to give the chimney a thorough cleaning and inspection before I fire it up

Thanks Fred

It's not recommended to use a power vent with a hand fed. It can be dangerous in the event of a failure or power outage since carbon monoxide can/will leak into the stove room, if the handfed is totally dependent on the power vent for draft. A natural drafting chimney is the best and safest option.

In this case the best option would be to power vent the oil fired forced air unit and use the chimney exclusively for the hand fired coal stove.. Although, people do share one chimney for two appliances successfully which is against code.. it's just not the best case scenario and success depends on each individual installation. There are a lot of variables that make it work or not.

Thanks for all the input , I will power vent the oil burner and use the existing glue just for the stove.
I’m in the process of dissembling the stove - from the top down as it appears it was assembled from the bottom up - so far so good. I’ve been using “ kroil “ spray to loosen the rusted in stove bolts and the stuff is amazing- expensive but I would even try any other penetrating oil at this point - fastners just back right out with little effort
Thanks again
Ted
Thanks again

Yup, we love pix of old stoves.

And while I've seen a few Kalamazoo kitchen ranges, I don't remember seeing any pix of their heating stoves. So, I'm really interested to see one in detail.
