Coal stove base question

I’m reassembling this coal stove and chamber that sits on the base plate seems to be bigger than the plate. Is it supposed to be this way or does it need to sealed?

Seems like that plate might be a "recast" part.
When using an original part as the casting pattern to reproduce a damaged part, the recast parts will be smaller than the original when they cool down because new cast iron shrinks 1/8 inch per foot after it comes out of the mold.
If that plate is the floor of the ash pan area, then the plate has to be sealed or it will be tough to control the fire with air leakage in under the grates.

Did you try flipping base plate over?
Should be a channel/ trough for next part to fit into.
That inner tube looking patch/ rectangle looking thing in pic #2, is a foundry repair. Usually they are on the none visible side of part. Might want that to face the floor.
Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 dry test fits, to get parts oriented right. If no pictures were taken during disassemble.
Did stove sound like an explosion, on dismantling?
